Bunia/Nairobi/Geneva – Amid the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has intensified its delivery of critical supplies to combat the crisis. Since the outbreak’s declaration in 2026, the IFRC has delivered 23 Safe and Dignified Burial (SDB) kits and over 300 body bags, totaling a supply chain operation valued at 2. 9 million CHF.
This operation also involves prepositioning supplies in neighboring countries, including Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan.
The challenges faced by the IFRC have been substantial, with remote geography, security concerns, and complex road networks complicating the logistics. Despite these hurdles, the organization has been steadfast in its mission to contain the virus’s spread and provide support to affected communities.
As of the first half of July, the IFRC estimates the delivery of a total of 181 SDB kits, 16,450 body bags, 550 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits, and 24 vehicles in DRC and neighboring countries. These shipments are set to arrive in phases at Entebbe International airport in Uganda and Jomo Kenyatta International airport in Nairobi, before being transported overland to Bunia, Ituri province.
The SDB kits, PPE kits, and body bags are not only operational goods but also critical public health tools that protect health experts, Red Cross volunteers, and communities from the virus. They also serve as a symbol of respect for families during their most difficult times.
The IFRC has called on the international community, donors, and partners to support the regional emergency appeal, ensuring that communities in DRC and across the region receive the full scope of life — saving assistance they urgently need.
As the situation evolves, the IFRC’s commitment to delivering essential materials and supporting response efforts remains unwavering.
