Ebola Outbreak Intensifies in DRC and Uganda with Over 550 Confirmed Cases BODY: CITY, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda – The Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) outbreak has intensified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, with the cumulative total of laboratory-confirmed cases reaching 550 as of 7 June 2026.
In the DRC, the outbreak has seen 229 new confirmed cases, including 53 new confirmed deaths, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 550 and deaths to 101.
The outbreak is heavily concentrated in Ituri Province, which accounts for 94. 2% of confirmed cases and 79. 2% of deaths.
In Uganda, the outbreak remains epidemiologically linked to transmission originating from the DRC, with eight additional confirmed cases reported, including one confirmed death.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have launched a joint continental preparedness and response plan to address the ongoing crisis.
