Grassroots Empowerment: Nigerian Girls’Basketball Dream Bigger Amidst Cultural Challenges ABUJA, NIGERIA – AUGUST 27, 2026 – In northern Nigeria, where sports are traditionally male-dominated, Grassroots To Greatness (G2G) is creating new possibilities for young female basketball players. Founded by Jawahir Bello, this initiative is not only offering training and competition opportunities but is also reshaping aspirations for girls in the region. Khamila Sani Ibrahim, a player from Kano State, reflects on her own struggles growing up: “It is very hard for me to train in basketball.
I only go out to play when they are not around, or I tell them I’m going to visit friends, and from there I go to the court. “Historically, access to courts and equipment, coaching, and funding have been scarce, making organized sports an elusive dream for many girls. G2G has been instrumental in addressing these gaps, providing a supportive environment for young female athletes to hone their skills and aim higher.
The initiative offers training sessions and competitive matches, while also respecting cultural norms — players wear custom hijabs and modest athletic attire. “Our core value is about participating in sports without doing anything that goes against our cultural values or our identity as Muslims, “Bello told Al Jazeera. Beyond athletic training, the program emphasizes education and personal development, with regular sessions held in community centers and schools.
This holistic approach has already impacted the lives of many, with girls expressing newfound ambition and dreams of professional careers or educational scholarships. Ibrahim’s father, once skeptical about the impact of competitive sports, has since become her biggest supporter after witnessing the structured environment of G2G. “I want to secure a college sports scholarship in the United States and eventually turn professional.
More than that, I want other Muslim girls across northern Nigeria to see that sports build your health, strength, and confidence, and that nothing should hold you back from chasing your dreams, “Ibrahim.
The G2G initiative continues to break barriers, inspiring and empowering young female athletes.
As it grows, it offers hope for a future where traditional norms are challenged, and dreams of all kinds can be chased.
