CITY, Kenya — In a region where drought and food insecurity persist, a transformative initiative is taking root at Inaarok Lukuny Comprehensive School in Kajiado County, Kenya. Since the introduction of a pilot program providing nutritious school meals, pupil enrollment has surged from 240 to over 525 children. This growth is attributed to the program’s focus on enhancing children’s diets and creating new opportunities for women farmers.
The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO), in partnership with Imperial College London, Egerton University, government agencies, and local community organizations, has led this multifaceted project. It aims to address the challenges of drought, food insecurity, and poverty by integrating school-based food production with community training. Inaarok Lukuny’s head teacher credits the increase in enrollment to the availability of more nutritious school meals.
The school farm, established as part of the KALRO — led program, produces a variety of crops and livestock that supply the school’s feeding program. This initiative not only ensures a consistent supply of food but also serves as a learning tool for students, who are involved in the farming process.
A recent study by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) indicates that implementing policies or interventions that influence the school food environment can have significant effects on children’s health and non-health outcomes.
The KALRO initiative also aims to provide training for women farmers in sustainable agricultural practices, thereby creating opportunities for economic empowerment.
As the program continues to gain traction, stakeholders are hopeful that it will serve as a model for similar initiatives across Kenya and beyond.
The success of Inaarok Lukuny Comprehensive School demonstrates the potential of combining educational and agricultural interventions to tackle some of the most pressing challenges faced by Africa’s drylands.
