Kenya’s Journalists Commit to Fact-Based Migration Reporting at Eastern Africa Summit BODY: Nairobi, Kenya – A landmark Eastern Africa Regional Meeting on Media Capacity Building for Informed Migration Narratives and Local Opportunities concluded in Mombasa, Kenya, from June 18th to 20th, 2026. Hosted by the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), the summit was a collaborative effort between the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the Federation of Eastern Africa Journalists (FEAJ).
The meeting, supported by the International Labour Organization (ILO) through the Better Regional Migration Management (BRMM) Programme and funded by the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), brought together journalists union leaders and media professionals from across Eastern Africa. Participants from Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda gathered to discuss the multifaceted challenges and opportunities surrounding migration in the region.
The summit’s primary objective was to enhance the quality of journalism on migration and labor mobility, emphasizing the importance of fact-based reporting and the exploration of local opportunities for migrants. FAJ President Omar Faruk Osman highlighted the crucial role of journalists in countering misinformation and disinformation, ensuring that migration debates are grounded in verified facts.
A key outcome of the summit was the commitment by journalist leaders to drive fact — based narratives on migration.
The regional launch of the ILO Toolkit on Migration Reporting was also a significant milestone, providing practical guidance for journalists covering migration and labor mobility issues. Participants discussed the risks associated with irregular migration, forced labor, and human trafficking, emphasizing the importance of ethical reporting that protects vulnerable communities and avoids sensationalism.
The summit also addressed the growing impact of misinformation and disinformation on migration narratives, enhancing participants’skills in fact-checking, verification, and information integrity.
The summit’s focus on fact-based reporting aligns with the broader efforts of the FAJ to operationalize the commitments of the Dakar Communiqué on Labour Migration Reporting and the African Narrative, as well as the Kigali Action Plan on Communicating Labour Migration and Mobility in Africa.
The outcomes of the summit are expected to contribute to more informed and balanced coverage of migration issues in Eastern Africa, fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.
