ILORIN, Nigeria – 19 November 2025 — Authorities in Kwara State have ordered the closure of all schools across Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin and Oke Ero following new security threats linked to armed groups operating in the region.
State Education Commissioner Lawal Olohungbebe said the shutdown is a precaution to protect students while security forces intensify operations against criminal elements believed to be hiding within local communities. He noted that authorities want to avoid a scenario where armed attackers attempt to use children as cover while fleeing military pressure.
The directive follows a recent attack in Eruku, in Ekiti Local Government Area, where gunmen stormed a church, heightening fear among residents and prompting a wider security sweep across neighbouring districts. Boarding schools in Irepodun were also closed after fresh intelligence indicated possible vulnerabilities.
The incident adds to rising anxiety over the worsening security situation in northern Nigeria. Earlier this week, armed men abducted at least 25 students from Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School in Kebbi State, killing a teacher and a security guard during the raid. Local leaders reported the attack occurred shortly after soldiers withdrew from a nearby checkpoint. Police have yet to issue a formal response.
Kwara officials say the school closures will remain in effect until security agencies confirm it is safe for pupils to return.
