Libreville, Gabon — July 12, 2026 – Contrary to a false report that swept through social media, the lycée public de Makokou in the province of Ogooué-Ivindo has not experienced a total failure in the Brevet d’Études du Premier Cycle (BEPC) results for the session ending July 2026.
The erroneous claim, which was widely shared on WhatsApp, was swiftly debunked by the school’s proviseur, Léonard Mengue Meno.
The letter that sparked the false report, which was seemingly signed by the proviseur, was dated July 10, 2026, and stated that no candidates from the lycée had been admitted.
However, this contradicts the actual results, which show that 66. 35% of candidates were admitted, with 33. 65% being deferred.
Mengue Meno emphasized that the letter was a fake and that no such note could have originated from him or any other responsible party at the school. He also pointed out several anomalies in the letter, including numerous grammatical errors and an incorrect stamp. Despite facing challenges such as infrastructure degradation and staffing shortages, particularly in mathematics, the lycée public de Makokou has demonstrated resilience in achieving these results.
The school’s physical condition has deteriorated over time, with worn-out facades and roofs, and the Parents’Association has had to intervene to cover the salaries of substitute teachers due to a lack of math teachers.
The Ministry of National Education has been working to address these issues, but the false report about the closure of the 2025-2026 school year for non-examination classes has caused unnecessary alarm. It is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and verify information before sharing it, especially in the education sector.
As the situation at the lycée public de Makokou and other educational institutions in Gabon continues to evolve, it is essential for all stakeholders to remain informed about the latest developments and support the efforts to improve the quality of education in the country.
