Makokou, Gabon — April 21, 2026 – The city of Makokou in the Ogooué-Ivindo province, Gabon, has marked a significant infrastructure milestone with the launch of the rehabilitation project for the “route des grumiers, “a key logging truck route.
The initiative, spearheaded by the forestry company KHLL in collaboration with local authorities, aims to mitigate the adverse impact of heavy logging traffic on the city’s roads. Hyacinthe N’no Akouma, the mayor of the second arrondissement of Makokou, emphasized the necessity of the project to prevent accidents caused by the passage of logging trucks on other city roads. Officials commented on the matter.
The rehabilitation works on this secondary road, measuring 3 kilometers in length, are expected to last approximately ten days and are being executed under the supervision of the local municipality.
The objective is to alleviate the burden on existing city roads and improve safety for all road users.
The project comes amidst broader infrastructure developments in the province, including the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of 35 kilometers of urban roads in Makokou.
Additionally, the Makokou — Mékambo stretch, which spans 260 kilometers, is in the mobilization phase, with the Chinese firm Maripoma established in Bombenda to oversee the project. These urban road projects are designed to manage the heavy traffic of logging trucks more effectively, which have historically caused significant damage to the city’s infrastructure. While the government views these projects as crucial for modernization and economic development, particularly in the context of the logging industry, questions remain regarding the environmental and social impact assessments of these infrastructure projects, the level of community involvement in planning and execution, and the long-term sustainability plans for the logging industry in the context of these new road developments.
As the rehabilitation of the “route des grumiers “progresses, the effects on the local community and the environment will be closely monitored, ensuring that the transformation of the transportation infrastructure in Ogooué-Ivindo province benefits all stakeholders.
