Mali: ICRC Strengthens Medical Support for Hospitals Amidst Conflict. Dakar, Senegal – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been instrumental in providing critical medical support to hospitals in Mali following the escalation of hostilities.
In response to the severe impact on civilian populations, particularly in areas such as Gao, Mopti, Kidal, and Ménaka, the ICRC has supplied essential medical supplies and equipment to ensure the continuity of healthcare services.
The ICRC has delivered urgent medical care, including the distribution of two emergency kits for injured civilians, which include antibiotics, analgesics, dressing materials, and sterile supplies.
Additionally, ten sets of medical equipment have been provided to the Gabriel Touré University Hospital and the Point G University Hospital in Bamako, along with 72 individual kits to the Mopti and Gao hospitals.
In a bid to maintain hospital operations, the ICRC has also supplied 2,000 liters of diesel to the regional hospital in Gao. This is part of a broader effort to support the health systems in Mali, which have been strained by the ongoing conflict. Patrick Youssef, the ICRC Director for Africa, expressed deep concern over the violence and its consequences, emphasizing the need for protection and respect for civilians, medical personnel, and health facilities.
The ICRC has been actively involved in Mali since 1965, providing continuous support through its presence in Bamako, Mopti, Tombouctou, Gao, Kidal, Ménaka, and Niafounké.
In collaboration with the Mali Ministry of Health, the ICRC has been providing medical and surgical teams to assist local hospitals in treating the wounded. This partnership has been crucial in addressing the urgent healthcare needs of the population, especially in conflict-affected areas.
The ICRC’s commitment to Mali extends beyond immediate relief efforts.
The organization has been involved in the country’s healthcare sector since 2012, providing equipment, medications, and support to hospitals and health centers across the country.
In 2025, their efforts resulted in the care of over 24,000 patients, including 13,784 wounded individuals.
As Mali continues to grapple with a protracted conflict and a pressing humanitarian crisis, the ICRC’s reinforcement of medical support is a vital lifeline for the affected populations.
The organization’s efforts not only aim to save lives but also lay the groundwork for sustainable recovery in the region.
