Pretoria, South Africa — The Pretoria High Court has heard allegations that former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula requested a bribe from a Defence Department contractor, Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndlhovu. Ntsondwa-Ndlhovu, who has confessed to paying Mapisa-Nqakula R4. 5 million in bribes, revealed that the first direct request from the former minister was for R200,000, during a meeting at a hotel near OR Tambo International Airport.
The State is seeking clarification on the indemnity it intends to grant Ntsondwa — Ndlhovu for testifying against Mapisa-Nqakula, as well as the separate criminal charges she faces in another court. Judge Mashudu Munzhelele ruled that the court has no jurisdiction to grant indemnity in relation to charges pending before another court.
The trial of Mapisa — Nqakula, who is also accused of money laundering, is ongoing.
The court has barred the media from broadcasting any audio or video footage of the witness, with Ntsondwa — Ndlhovu expected to continue her testimony on Friday.
