Madigipaie Program Unveiled in Libreville to Digitize Payments and Foster Financial Transparency BODY: Libreville, Gabon – The Minister of Digital Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation, Mark-Alexandre Doumba, recently presented the Madigipaie program to the Mayor of Libreville, Eugène Mba.
The program, aimed at transforming financial transactions in Gabon, received institutional support through a convention signed between the Gabonese State and the Central Bank of West African States (BEAC). This collaboration ensures that the QR code payment system adheres to regional technical standards for interoperability. Madigipaie’s strategic objectives include reducing cash usage, establishing a national digital payment system, and promoting financial inclusion for market vendors.
With over 90% of local market transactions conducted in cash, the program seeks to address the informality of the sector and the subsequent loss of tax revenue due to lack of financial traceability.
The initiative is set to leverage Gabon’s high internet penetration rate, estimated at 73. 7% nationally, to promote digital payments across various public services.
The program is designed to allow citizens to make payments via mobile money by scanning a GIMACPAY QR code, thereby streamlining transactions and enhancing transparency.
The Libreville Municipal Council has already initiated an internal digitalization process, and the program is expected to reinforce these efforts.
The commune aims to collaborate with the Ministry of Digital Economy to facilitate the adoption of digitalization through the GIMAC QR code system, thereby aiding in the registration of economic operators. Yves Benoît Andecko, the program coordinator, highlighted the importance of addressing the current challenges faced by Gabon’s financial sector, emphasizing the need for cybersecurity and system integration.
The government will closely monitor the program’s rollout to ensure its success and to make necessary adjustments as required.
As Gabon takes this digital leap, the Madigipaie program is poised to serve as a model for other African nations looking to modernize their public payment systems, potentially reshaping the financial landscape across the continent.
