The project, presented by Marthe Mapangou, the director of TNC’s Forest & Climate Program, seeks to implement large-scale climate-smart forestry practices (CSF) to enhance the country’s forest economy and bolster climate resilience. With the objective of covering 7 million hectares of forest concessions, particularly around the Ramsar Sites of the Bas-Ogooué, the project is a critical step in Gabon’s environmental and economic future.
The initiative aims to avoid the emission of 7 million tons of CO2 through the adoption of CSF practices, green finance mobilization, and the use of Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) mechanisms. It is designed to align with Gabon’s National Determined Contributions (NDCs), the National Land Allocation Plan (PNAT), and the National Growth and Development Plan (PNCD 2026-2030).
The project is structured around three main components: technical deployment of CSF practices; economic mobilization of sustainable funding and market incentives; and policy creation to foster an environment conducive to CSF and ecosystem services valuation.
The MRV system is integrated with the National Observation System of Natural and Forest Resources (SNORNF), ensuring a robust monitoring framework.
As the project moves forward, stakeholders are engaged in a two — day workshop to refine the project and reach a consensus.
The goal is to finalize a version ready for submission to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for the final validation phase.
The indicative cost for the project is $30 million in GCF grants, supplemented by a $25 million loan supported by cofinancing. Gabon’s commitment to sustainable forestry is a testament to its dedication to balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship.
