Mogadishu, Somalia — Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Daud Aweis Jama, has opened an annual knowledge competition that will air on state outlets throughout Ramadan, according to an official statement released Wednesday evening.
The broadcast tournament has drawn participants from 32 districts across the federal republic and is scheduled to run nightly after the taraweeh prayers.
The opener paired representatives of Las Anod district (Sool region) against a team from Karan district (Banadir region).
A communiqué from the ministry said the contest is intended to “promote learning, heritage and critical thinking” during the holy month. Speaking at the launch, Minister Jama welcomed teams from every region and thanked program hosts, sponsors and the Banadir regional administration for coordinating local try-outs. Representatives of IBS Bank, described as the event’s principal backer, attended the short ceremony in the capital.
The ministry statement gave no fixed prize list or broadcast schedule, and independent confirmation of viewer numbers was not immediately available.
In previous years the federal government has used Ramadan radio and TV slots to air Qur’an-recitation contests and student quiz shows. No further match results or upcoming pairings had been released at the time of writing.
Further details are expected as the competition progresses.
