Moroccan Football Federation to Appeal CAF Sanctions After AFCON Final. Casablanca, Morocco — The Moroccan Football Federation has announced its intention to appeal the disciplinary sanctions and fines imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the controversial Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal on January 18.
The federation has criticized the sanctions as disproportionate to the incidents that occurred during the match.
The match, which Senegal won in extra time, was marred by a 14-minute interruption after Senegalese players walked off the field following a decision to disallow a goal late in regulation time. Senegal was also subject to sporting and financial sanctions, but its football federation indicated last week that it would respect the disciplinary committees’ruling. Morocco’s appeal to have the match result overturned was rejected by CAF.
This includes the use of lasers to try and distract Senegalese players. Both were penalized for attempting to remove Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s towel in heavy rain conditions.
According to regional officials, the Moroccan federation has expressed its intent to appeal the sanctions, arguing that they are not in line with the “seriousness and gravity “of the incidents.
The federation is expected to present its case to the CAF in the coming days.
The situation highlights the ongoing tensions and controversies that can arise in high — stakes international sports events. While both federations have faced sanctions, the differing reactions underscore the complexities involved in addressing such issues.
Further details regarding the appeal process and potential outcomes are expected to emerge in the coming days.
