In Rabat, Morocco, a significant stride in judicial cooperation was taken as Morocco and Portugal engaged in high — level discussions aimed at bolstering legal and judicial security. The talks, which transpired on Thursday, were a result of an official working visit by Portugal’s Minister of Justice, Rita Alarcao Júdice, and were hosted by Morocco’s Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi.
The meeting served as a platform for both ministers to explore strategies for deepening legal and judicial collaboration. They discussed the promotion of expertise exchange and the identification of new partnership avenues across various domains, including civil and criminal justice, cross-border case management, and mutual legal assistance frameworks.
Both Ouahbi and Alarcao Júdice committed to the continuation of existing cooperation mechanisms and the reinforcement of institutional coordination. This includes the initiation of new joint initiatives, such as regular meetings between officials and experts, reciprocal visits, the formulation of joint action plans, and the establishment of direct communication channels between judicial institutions in both countries.
Addressing the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP), Ouahbi emphasized the importance of these talks, highlighting the shared commitment to advancing judicial cooperation. He underscored the necessity of enhancing coordination and expertise exchange to tackle the increasing challenges posed by cross-border crime. Moreover, he emphasized that strengthening legal and judicial security is pivotal for fostering trust in the justice system and safeguarding rights and freedoms.
In line with this, Ouahbi also stressed the need for modernizing Morocco’s justice system through accelerated digital transformation, streamlined procedures, and the effective implementation of judicial decisions. The ultimate objective is to enhance judicial performance and the quality of services rendered to citizens.
On her part, Alarcao Júdice described the Morocco-Portugal judicial partnership as a model of constructive collaboration. She praised the trust and expertise exchange that underpins the relationship and reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to sustaining this positive momentum. This includes sharing best practices and enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as combating organized crime, modernizing judicial administration, and promoting digital tools in judicial management.
