Lagos, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has announced the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to encompass electric vehicles (EVs), renaming it the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV). This strategic move aims to bolster Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy.
According to a statement released on Thursday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV, Ismael Ahmed, has been tasked with establishing a process for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits across the nation. These kits are designed to be accessible to Nigerians at an affordable cost, supported by CreditCorp Nigeria and other financial institutions.
Additionally, President Tinubu has directed the accelerated deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs) to enhance access to CNG while permanent infrastructure is being developed. PiCNG & EV will oversee Nigeria’s comprehensive clean mobility strategy, integrating both gas-driven and electric vehicles nationwide.
The initiative will continue to develop CNG infrastructure, including Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Units, and conversion programs. It will also focus on the development and rollout of EV charging infrastructure and related investments. This expansion is seen as a strategic move to leverage Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources, aiming to lower costs, strengthen energy security, and conserve foreign exchange. Paragraph: The inclusion of electric vehicles in the PiCNG & EV initiative underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible mobility solutions for the Nigerian public.
