TRIPOLI, Libya — Austrian energy company OMV has made a significant discovery in the Sirte Basin, Libya, with the potential to significantly enhance the country’s oil production capabilities.
The National Oil Corporation (NOC) confirmed that the discovery, located in the Essar field, is estimated to contain 195 million barrels of recoverable oil. This discovery, following the drilling of well B1-106/4, is expected to contribute to Libya’s ambitious plans to restore its position as a leading oil producer in Africa.
The field, which is situated in the upper and lower Sabil reservoirs, is projected to yield around 5,000 barrels per day (bpd) once fully operational.
The development of the Essar field will be spearheaded by Zueitina Oil Operations Company, with the objective of commencing production as swiftly as possible due to the field’s proximity to existing oil infrastructure.
The announcement comes amidst Libya’s ongoing efforts to attract international investment into its energy sector and to increase oil output following years of disruption caused by conflict. Libya, home to Africa’s largest proven crude oil reserves, has been actively seeking to reinvigorate its upstream sector.
The country has recently concluded its first oil and gas licensing round in nearly two decades, a move aimed at attracting international energy companies to explore and produce in the region.
The OMV discovery, along with the signing of exploration and production — sharing agreements with global energy firms such as Repsol, Turkish Petroleum, Eni, QatarEnergy, and MOL, is seen as a crucial step in Libya’s strategy to unlock new reserves and bolster its oil production levels.
As Libya targets an increase in daily oil production from its current 1. 4 million bpd to 2 million bpd by the end of the year, the commercial approval of the Essar discovery is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving these goals.
The international community and environmentalists will be watching closely as Libya navigates the complexities of balancing its economic interests with environmental responsibilities in the face of global climate change.
