Controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Morocco and Senegal has reignited, with fresh doubts emerging in the aftermath of recent statements from Patrice Motsepe. Motsepe’s recent public comments have added layers of uncertainty to the events of the match, which was held in Rabat in January and is currently under review by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The focus of the controversy is the incident when Senegal players temporarily walked off the pitch during the match in protest, with no disciplinary sanctions issued despite the significant disruption.
The match’s outcome was ultimately overturned, and the case is currently being scrutinized by CAS. During a recent press conference, Motsepe avoided directly addressing allegations of instructions to the referee regarding the handling of yellow cards, instead directing questions to the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) secretary general. This move has sparked criticism, as the secretary general merely confirmed that the governing body is “following an ongoing procedure, “without providing any confirmation or denial of the claims.
The absence of a clear statement has only intensified doubts about potential interference in the refereeing of the match, a theory that has been fiercely supported in Morocco. Reports also suggest the possible involvement of Olivier Safari, though no official confirmation has been released. The ongoing investigation continues to cast a shadow over the 2025 AFCON and the governance of African football.
CAF has previously cleared match officials of any wrongdoing, but with legal proceedings still ongoing and unanswered questions lingering, the governing body’s lack of definitive explanations is keeping the controversy alive.
