Douala, Cameroon — Perenco Cameroon and Perenco Gabon have partnered with the UCAC-ICAM Institute in Douala to launch an Industry 4.0 laboratory, a move aimed at bridging the skills gap in Central Africa’s industrial landscape. The lab, a mini-factory designed to provide hands-on experience, will support the development of engineers and technicians capable of contributing to key projects in the region.
The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has welcomed the initiative, viewing it as a scalable model for local content development and workforce participation in Africa’s energy value chain. The lab will offer advanced automation, digital simulation, and smart production technologies to students, preparing them for practical industry applications.
Students from multiple disciplines will engage with cutting — edge technologies, with General Engineering students training on robotic systems and virtual reality simulations, and Computer Science Engineering students focusing on industrial IoT and smart technologies. Process Engineering students will gain experience in automated production systems, while Petroleum program students will develop expertise in energy systems and instrumentation control.
The UCAC — ICAM laboratory’s graduates are already sought after by leading companies in Douala, reflecting the growing demand for locally trained, industry-ready talent. NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC, underscores the importance of local skills development for a competitive and sustainable energy sector in Africa. The initiative aligns with the AEC’s vision of a self-sufficient and globally competitive African energy sector.
