Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Pope Leo XIV has appointed Mgr Abune Tesfaye Tadesse Gebresilasie as the new Metropolitan Archbishop of the Ethiopian capital, succeeding Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, who will celebrate his 78th birthday in July, Vatican News reported.
The Pontiff has initiated a change at the helm of the Catholic Church in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by entrusting the pastoral role to the current Auxiliary Bishop, Mgr Tesfaye Tadesse Gebresilasie, aged 56.
The new Metropolitan, hailing from Harar, joined the Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus in 1986 and was ordained a priest in 1995. He holds a license in Islamic Studies from the Pontifical Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Rome and has also undergone training at the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome. Mgr Tesfaye Tadesse Gebresilasie served as the director of the Comboni School in Haro Wato, southern Ethiopia, and held several positions within his religious institute, up to the role of Superior General of the Missionaries of the Comboni from 2015 to 2024.
