As Cameroon prepares for the visit of Pope Leo XIV, Archbishop Andrew Nkea of Bamenda has emphasized the need for patience and unity. Speaking at a press briefing at the Big Mankon Cathedral Hall, Archbishop Nkea framed the papal visit as a spiritual event aimed at fostering peace and unity, rather than addressing political issues directly.
Peace as a Process.
Archbishop Nkea cautioned that peace is not an immediate solution but a gradual process. The Pope’s visit, set for April 15 to 18, is intended to be pastoral in nature, with the Archbishop emphasizing that the Pontiff will not bring political solutions to the country’s challenges.
Inclusive Message.
The Pope’s message, centered on the theme “May They All Be One,” is designed to address social issues such as political tensions, ethnic fragmentation, and hate speech. The Archbishop highlighted the inclusive nature of the visit, which will bring together representatives from various religious and civil society groups.
Itinerary and Preparation.
The Pope’s itinerary includes stops in Bamenda, Yaoundé, and Douala, where he will engage with a range of stakeholders, including internally displaced persons. Preparations for the visit have led to infrastructure upgrades in Bamenda, and Archbishop Nkea clarified that access to papal events will be controlled through free accreditation passes.
Responsibility and Welcoming. The briefing, Archbishop Nkea called on journalists to report responsibly and encouraged Cameroonians to welcome the Pope with openness, allowing his message of peace to take root.
