Sudan’s Humanitarian Crisis Intensifies: A Deepening Tragedy in El Obeid and Beyond Khartoum, Sudan – The situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with El Obeid and other regions facing a severe humanitarian crisis. Drone attacks by advancing rebel fighters have intensified, leading to civilian casualties and placing around half a million civilians at risk of large-scale atrocities, according to recent reports.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has resulted in a massive displacement of civilians.
Since the conflict began in April 2023, hundreds of thousands of people have fled into neighboring countries or returned home in adverse circumstances, including to the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, South Sudan, and Uganda. Others have self-relocated within Sudan, adding to the complexity of the crisis.
UNICEF has made significant strides in providing education to children affected by the conflict, reaching over 800,000 children with education in May 2026.
However, over 8 million remain out of school, with the most severe disruptions in Darfur and conflict-affected Kordofan. This lack of access to education further exacerbates the long-term impact of the crisis on the country’s youth.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has expressed concern about the RSF’s rapid buildup near El Obeid, warning of the high risk of violence against civilians.
Amnesty International has also accused the RSF of carrying out grave rights violations in El Fasher, Western Darfur, earlier in the year. Several Member States have warned that the situation in El Obeid is similar to that of El Fasher, with the potential for severe rights violations.
In addition to the escalating violence, Sudan faces a deepening health and humanitarian emergency.
According to the World Health Organization, 33. 7 million people in Sudan require urgent assistance, including 7. 4 million internally displaced people (IDPs).
Humanitarian agencies have faced numerous challenges in their efforts to provide aid, including insecurity, destruction, lack of funding, and bureaucratic obstacles.
The international community has called for an immediate end to the violence and for humanitarian access to be granted to all affected areas.
As the crisis deepens, the need for a peaceful resolution becomes increasingly urgent to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
As the situation in Sudan continues to worsen, the international community must remain vigilant and committed to providing support to those affected by the crisis. Only through a coordinated and compassionate response can the country begin to heal and rebuild.
