Khartoum, Sudan — In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked the nation, the Sudanese Doctors Network has reported a series of deliberate drone attacks on a kindergarten and civilian facilities in the war-torn town of Kalogi, Sudan. The attacks, which have resulted in numerous deaths, predominantly among children, have been widely condemned as a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
According to the Sudanese Doctors Network, the drone strikes were executed with a callous disregard for human life, targeting the kindergarten and a rural hospital in Kalogi. The devastating aftermath has left at least nine people dead, including four children and two women, with seven others sustaining injuries. The first missile struck the kindergarten, while a second was fired as residents rushed to assist the wounded. A third missile then hit the hospital as victims were being transported there for medical attention.
The Sudanese Doctors Network has strongly condemned the bombings, labeling them as a serious violation of international humanitarian law. They have accused both the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) of deliberately targeting civilian facilities. This comes amidst a backdrop of escalating violence in South Kordofan, where the Sudanese army has launched operations in several localities, and clashes have been reported between the army and the SPLM-N, which has been fighting alongside the RSF.
The broader context of the conflict in Sudan is one of a severe humanitarian crisis. Since April 2023, the nation has been embroiled in a war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This conflict has led to a catastrophic situation, with an estimated 13,000+ people killed and millions displaced. Reports of war crimes and crimes against humanity have been surfacing, with both sides accused of deliberate killings of civilians, starvation, and obstruction of humanitarian aid. The use of heavy explosive weapons in densely populated areas has resulted in numerous civilian casualties.
