Moscow, Russia –
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed optimism about the upcoming Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, emphasizing that Moscow supports peaceful solutions but does not intend to interfere in regional matters.
Lavrov reaffirmed that Russia opposes violence and advocates peaceful coexistence as the only way to resolve crises and prevent further bloodshed. He noted that several Arab countries are prepared to take steps toward peace, adding that Russia hopes “Israel recognizes this fact.”
According to Lavrov, when Moscow previously urged Israel to show restraint in its military operations in Gaza, Israeli officials reportedly replied, “There are no civilians in Gaza; everyone is a terrorist.”
Lavrov further stated that Russia is ready to engage in any diplomatic format aimed at resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, stressing that the creation of a Palestinian state is essential and cannot be avoided. He criticized Israel’s long-standing lack of seriousness in addressing the Palestinian statehood issue.
The minister also addressed broader international topics. On Western Sahara, Lavrov said Russia’s position is guided by United Nations Security Council resolutions and that Morocco’s autonomy plan could be acceptable—provided it is agreed upon by all concerned parties.
Regarding Russia-Iran defense cooperation, Lavrov asserted that all collaborations are conducted in full compliance with international law, and that Russia provides Iran only with the equipment it legitimately requires.
He also reflected on African regional tensions, noting that many of today’s disputes stem from colonial-era borders drawn “with a ruler,” which continue to influence modern geopolitical divisions.
