Kigali, Rwanda — January 23, 2026 Rwanda is set to embark on a groundbreaking initiative, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) technology in over 50 health clinics across the nation. This move is part of a broader effort to bolster healthcare services in Africa, with the aim of supporting 1,000 clinics continent-wide.
The AI — powered technology is designed to enhance healthcare efficiency and support clinical judgments, rather than replace human professionals.
According to Andrew Muhire, a senior official with Rwanda’s Ministry of Health, the system is intended to be a complementary tool within an already strained health system. Rwanda currently faces a significant healthcare worker shortage, with one healthcare worker serving approximately 1,000 patients, compared to the globally recommended ratio of 4:1,000.
The Gates Foundation, in partnership with OpenAI, has committed a joint funding of $50 million over two years for the Horizons1000 initiative, which aims to bridge the health inequality gap in poorer countries.
Officials commented on the matter.
However, there are concerns about the technology’s language compatibility. With English not widely spoken in Rwanda, efforts are underway to develop AI technologies in Kinyarwanda, the language spoken by about 75% of the population.
Audace Niyonkuru, CEO of AI and open data company Digital Umuganda, warned that deploying AI technologies not operating in Kinyarwanda could pose a serious barrier to effective care.
The initiative is part of Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to leveraging technology to improve public services.
The country has been at the forefront of implementing digital solutions, including mobile health platforms, to enhance healthcare delivery.
The Gates Foundation has a long — standing history of investing in global health initiatives, focusing on reducing poverty and improving health outcomes. Further details regarding the implementation of the AI technology in Rwanda are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
