MOGADISHU, Somalia — A surge of heavy rainfall in Somalia’s Banadir region has led to widespread flooding, particularly affecting low-lying IDP settlements in Dayniile District. This sudden disaster has displaced over 4,000 individuals, exacerbating the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
The flooding has not only damaged shelters and essential infrastructure but has also triggered new displacement movements among already vulnerable populations.
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, an estimated 678 households, or approximately 4,068 individuals, have been displaced as a result of the flooding.
The displaced populations, including those previously displaced by conflict in Middle Shabelle, are now forced to move again due to climate — related shocks. Women, children, older persons, and persons with disabilities are among the most affected, facing heightened exposure to loss of shelter, overcrowded living conditions, and limited access to basic services.
The Banadir Regional Administration has launched an emergency response strategy to address drainage issues and mitigate further flooding.
However, the scale of the crisis suggests that additional support is needed.
The displaced individuals are in urgent need of shelter, food, and medical assistance.
The situation in Somalia is further complicated by ongoing conflict and severe climatic shocks.
In 2025, northern regions faced an extended drought, worsening water scarcity and food insecurity. These recurring climatic shocks have been compounded by ongoing and intensifying local inter-clan conflicts and the broader conflict between the Somali state and non-state armed groups.
The humanitarian situation remains critical, with over 17. 6 million people in need of assistance, including 3. 8 million children.
The country’s displaced population has reached over 4. 3 million, with 4. 8 million people currently in need of shelter.
The African Union, United Nations, UNHCR, and other humanitarian organizations must continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary assistance to mitigate the impact of this disaster.
