Mogadishu, Somalia — The Somalia Protection Cluster has released its June 2026 newsletter, detailing a critical situation with over 146,447 internally displaced individuals (IDPs) due to conflict and insecurity, drought, and other causes.
The newsletter underscores the urgency of providing sustained protection services and support to these vulnerable communities. Conflict and insecurity are the primary drivers of displacement, accounting for 68% of the IDPs, followed by drought at 28%.
The Protection Cluster has noted the increasing protection risks, with 2,138 individuals reported to have been exposed to such risks during the same period.
The El Niño phenomenon is anticipated to exacerbate the situation with a high likelihood of El Niño conditions during the October–December season, which could lead to increased flood risks across parts of Somalia.
The Protection Cluster is actively working on an Inter — Cluster Anticipatory Action Framework to integrate protection priorities into preparedness efforts. Between 18 June and 22 June 2026, the Protection and Solutions Monitoring Network recorded the displacement of approximately 3,500 households, or around 21,000 individuals, in Galkayo district, along with cross-border displacement of 1,230 individuals due to severe drought and deteriorating living conditions.
The situation is further complicated by evictions, with over 17,000 persons affected in various locations including Mogadishu, Bosasso, Baidoa, and Kismayo.
The majority of these evictions were driven by agreement expiry, government — led land repossession, ownership disputes, increased rent, property sales, and policy changes. Despite the challenges of accessing affected areas due to insecurity and resource constraints, the Protection Cluster is engaging partners and local authorities to mobilize responses to the affected populations.
The newsletter emphasizes the need for a coordinated international response to the displacement crisis and security challenges, including increased funding and support for humanitarian organizations.
The situation in Somalia serves as a stark reminder of the urgency to address the root causes of displacement and insecurity to achieve long — term stability and peace in the region.
