Mogadishu, Somalia — In Somalia’s Lower Juba and Lower Shabelle regions, the humanitarian crisis has intensified, with displacement, drought, and inflation exacerbating acute needs, particularly among minority communities.
The situation is reflected in a May 2026 snapshot report, which shows that food security and livelihood assistance are the top priorities for the affected populations.
The report, sourced from Talk to Loop, indicates that over six million people across Somalia are facing Crisis or Emergency levels of food insecurity, a figure that has doubled from the previous year. This stark reality is compounded by rising food prices, livelihood deterioration, displacement, and a decline in humanitarian assistance. While WASH needs have decreased significantly, the report highlights that food security and livelihood-related requests remain at the forefront, with 34% and 32% of the requests, respectively.
The May 2026 PC Projection Update1 estimates that these needs are a direct result of the current humanitarian challenges.
The report also notes an increase in service — level complaints and concerns regarding aid accessibility, with 81% of feedback focusing on these issues. This rise in service-level complaints and concerns may be indicative of broader funding constraints affecting humanitarian operations in Somalia, as reported by humanitarian agencies. Protection-related concerns decreased to 16% of all feedback, with GBV remaining the most reported protection concern.
The report further reveals that most sensitive reports were submitted by individuals on their own behalf, with women and girls accounting for 56% of all sensitive feedback.
The situation underscores the urgent need for increased funding and access to deliver essential life — saving assistance.
The international community is called upon to provide a more coordinated and targeted response to ensure that assistance reaches the most vulnerable populations, particularly in the Lower Juba and Lower Shabelle regions.
