Johannesburg, South Africa — Fuel retailers have asked the government for an immediate diesel price increase after a supply squeeze left pumps empty across the country, with market forecasts already pointing to a possible R10-a-litre rise next week.
TotalEnergies, one of the largest distributors, has rescinded a recent price rollback, citing the worsening shortage and signalling sharper volatility for motorists and haulage firms dependent on the fuel.
Local service stations confirm that many forecourts have no diesel available, forcing commercial fleets and private drivers to queue or seek alternatives.
Paraffin and petrol supplies have not been affected, but industry officials warn that prolonged diesel disruptions could push up transport and food costs.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has not yet responded to the retailers’ request for an off-cycle price adjustment.
