South Africa’s Engineers and Innovators Urged to Apply for Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation CITY, South Africa – The Royal Academy of Engineering has issued a special call to engineers and innovators in South Africa to apply for the 2027 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. This prestigious award, co-funded by the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, is a beacon of recognition for engineering-led innovation across sub-Saharan Africa.
The Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation is now in its 14th year, offering a total prize pool of £85,000.
The winner will receive £50,000, with £10,000 each for the three finalists, and an additional £5,000 for the ‘One-to-Watch’award. Last year, the prize received a record number of applications, reflecting the continent’s growing interest in engineering innovation.
In 2026, 16 innovators from 11 African countries were shortlisted, including innovators from Lesotho and Niger for the first time.
The Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation has become a symbol of engineering excellence, fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.
The prize not only celebrates the ingenuity of engineers and innovators but also supports the commercialization of their ideas. Since its inception in 2014, the Africa Prize has supported 165 businesses from 22 countries, employing over 40,000 people and benefiting more than 11 million people. Applications are open for individuals and teams based in sub-Saharan Africa who are developing scalable engineering solutions with the potential to deliver social or environmental impact.
Innovations should be at an early stage of commercialization and supported by a robust business plan.
The Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation also provides invaluable training, communication resources, and mentoring to develop products and businesses. Winners will be announced in October.
