Khartoum, Sudan — In a chilling revelation, Amnesty International has levelled grave accusations against Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for a brutal assault on the Zamzam camp in North Darfur, marking a harrowing escalation in the region’s ongoing conflict.
The Zamzam camp, a sanctuary for an estimated 700,000 internally displaced persons, bore the brunt of RSF’s violent campaign between April 11 and 13, 2025. This assault, characterized by the use of explosive weapons and indiscriminate firing in densely populated areas, has left a trail of death and destruction.
According to Amnesty International’s harrowing report, at least 47 civilians were killed by RSF fighters, including those seeking refuge in mosques, clinics, and homes. The toll of the violence extends beyond Zamzam, with neighboring Um Kadada witnessing the death of at least 400 civilians, including women and children.
The report suggests that the RSF targeted civilians they believed to be associated with the Joint Forces or the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). This deliberate targeting, combined with the destruction and looting of civilian infrastructure, has led Amnesty International to call for a war crimes investigation.
The Zamzam camp, a 20-year-old refuge for thousands, was nearly emptied by the attack, with around 400,000 people displaced in a matter of days. The RSF’s actions, including the burning of homes, market stalls, and businesses, have caused severe damage to essential civilian infrastructure.
This incident, occurring amidst a broader campaign by the RSF to seize control of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, underscores the alarming disregard for human life in the region. The Zamzam camp’s assault is a stark reminder of the human cost of the conflict, with the displaced and vulnerable paying the highest price.
Experts have expressed deep concern over the situation, with one analyst noting, “The RSF’s actions in Zamzam camp represent a flagrant violation of international law and a grave threat to the civilian population.” The international community is under increasing pressure to respond to these allegations and ensure accountability for the victims.
As the situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate, the Zamzam camp attack serves as a somber testament to the suffering endured by the region’s displaced populations. The call for justice and an end to the violence grows louder, with the hope that the international community will act decisively to protect the innocent and bring those responsible to justice.
