Sudan Calls for RSF to Be Classified as Terrorist Group at Russia — Africa Forum. Khartoum, Sudan — Sudanese officials have called for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to be designated as a terrorist organization, accusing the group of committing crimes against Sudanese citizens.
The appeal was made during the Russia — Africa Partnership Forum in Cairo, where Sudanese Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr.
Lamia Abdel Ghaffar, emphasized the need for accountability and support in isolating the RSF.
The RSF, a paramilitary group, has been in conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces since April 2023, resulting in a war that has killed an estimated 40,000 people and displaced over 14 million. Sudan has pointed fingers at the United Arab Emirates (UAE), claiming the Gulf nation provides funding and weapons to the RSF. “.
Sudan calls for this group (the Rapid Support Forces) to be classified as a terrorist group and held accountable for the crimes it has committed, “Dr.
Abdel Ghaffar. She also accused the UAE of being complicit in the crimes against Sudanese citizens by funding and supporting the RSF politically, diplomatically, and through media.
The UK recently sanctioned four RSF commanders for mass killings, sexual violence, and deliberate attacks on civilians in El Fasher, Darfur.
However, sanctions were not issued against the UAE, which has long been accused of supporting the RSF. Both the United Nations and the United States have also accused the RSF of serious human rights violations during their takeover of El Fasher earlier this year.
The Russia — Africa Partnership Forum, which brings together ministers from over 50 African countries and representatives from several African and regional organizations, aims to deepen political and economic ties between Russia and the African continent. It has gained momentum following the 2023 summit in St. Petersburg, where President Vladimir Putin sought African leaders’support to break the political and economic isolation imposed on Russia by Western countries.
The conflict in Sudan has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with many areas experiencing famine and disease.
The appeal for the RSF to be classified as a terrorist group underscores the urgency of finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict. Further details are expected as the situation continues to develop.
