Thirteen Individuals Suspected of Illegal Mining Activities, Known As Zama Zamas, Were Apprehended in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
The suspects, identified as Lesotho nationals, were accused of operating out of the Kaserne Informal Settlement. They are also alleged to have caused fear among residents in the informal settlement and its surrounding areas.
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, a tip — off about a group of armed men led to the operation, which involved officials from both the JMPD and SAPS. During the raid, law enforcement discovered the 13 men in a shack and seized two unlicensed firearms along with 92 rounds of live ammunition. Fihla emphasized that the removal of the high-calibre rounds and illegal firearms was a significant setback for the local criminal network.
He further stated that the seized firearms would be subjected to ballistics testing as part of ongoing investigations.
