Khartoum, Sudan — Amidst the escalating conflict in Darfur, Sudan, thousands of mothers are addressing the harsh realities of displacement in Chad’s Iridimi refugee camp.
The once — peaceful Orchi area of western Sudan has been transformed into a landscape of devastation, as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a sweeping offensive on June 15, 2026. Thuraya Mukhtar, a 45-year-old mother, now finds herself under a lone tree in the Iridimi camp, Eastern Chad, with her children, having fled their home in the Orchi area.
The journey was perilous, marked by explosions and relentless gunfire. Officials commented on the matter.
The situation in Darfur, which has been ongoing since 2003, has led to widespread displacement and severe human rights abuses.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that over 8,000 people were displaced from villages in the locality of Kernoi, North Darfur state, with some fleeing within the state and others crossing into Chad.
The crisis has intensified, with a nutrition emergency unfolding in North Darfur state.
A survey conducted by UNICEF and partners in May 2026 revealed acute malnutrition levels far exceeding the 15 per cent emergency threshold, with one location, Um Baru, having the highest global acute malnutrition rate of 53 per cent.
The UNHCR reports that over 600,000 new Sudanese refugees have entered Chad, placing a significant strain on the resources of humanitarian agencies.
In the Iridimi camp, the challenges are numerous, including overcrowding, extreme heat, and a lack of clean water and sanitation facilities.
As the situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate, the plight of the Sudanese refugees in Chad grows more dire.
The international community must act swiftly to provide the necessary assistance to these vulnerable families, ensuring that they have access to food, clean water, and shelter.
The world cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of these mothers and their children under the trees in Chad.
