Ethiopia Truck Crash Claims 22 Lives, Raises Migration Route Safety Concerns. City, Country — Semera, Ethiopia — At least 22 people have lost their lives and 65 others have been injured in a tragic road accident involving a cargo truck in Ethiopia, according to local authorities.
The incident, which occurred in the northern Afar region, highlights the risks faced by asylum seekers and migrants on the dangerous Eastern Route.
The Afar communications bureau reported that the accident happened when the overloaded truck overturned on a highway in Semera. Many of those aboard were said to have been misled by illegal brokers and unaware of the dangers of the travel route.
The regional government is providing life — saving operations and medical attention to the injured at Doubtee Referral Hospital.
Ethiopia serves as a key departure point for the Eastern Route, which connects countries in the Horn of Africa to Gulf nations.
The route is popular among asylum seekers and migrants looking for employment opportunities, many of whom work as laborers or domestic workers.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that between January and September 2025, there were 890 deaths and disappearances along the Eastern Route, a significant increase from the previous year.
The IOM has described the Eastern Route as the “busiest and riskiest migration route in the world.”Despite the high casualty figures, the route remains popular.
According to the IOM, the number of tracked outgoing movements along the Eastern Route increased by 24 percent in 2025 compared to 2024, mainly due to resumed data collection in Yemen and shifting routes to evade controls in Djibouti and Somalia.
Ethiopia, with a population of approximately 130 million and one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa, faces significant economic challenges. More than 40 percent of its population lives below the poverty line, according to the World Bank.
Regional officials confirmed the incident and expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased.
The government is working to ensure the injured receive adequate medical care. Further details are expected as the investigation into the crash continues.
