City, Tunisia — Tunisia Court Upholds Extended Prison Sentences for Political Opponents. Tunisia’s judiciary has upheld and extended prison sentences for several political opponents, including the leader of the opposition party Ennahdha, Rached Ghannouchi.
The 84-year-old politician, who is facing a death sentence in prison, saw his 14-year sentence increased to over 40 years on Monday.
According to local reports, the court in Tunisia also confirmed the sentences of several other leading political figures, all accused of conspiring against authoritarian president Kais Saied. Ghannouchi, who refused to appeal the decision, stated that he was convinced he would not receive a fair trial and that the case against him had been fabricated by political motives. Under Saied’s presidency, which began in 2021, the opposition and civil society figures have faced increasing pressure on their freedom and rights.
The president seized control of almost all powers in the country and has sought to imprison and silence numerous opposition politicians, journalists, and activists since then.
The “Conspiracy 2″case involves a total of 21 persons accused of conspiracy against the government. Eleven of them have managed to flee the country, while ten, including Ghannouchi, remain behind bars.
Regional officials confirmed that the sentences handed down are part of a broader crackdown on political dissent in the North African nation.
The developments have raised concerns about the state of democracy in Tunisia. Further details regarding the reactions of the international community to these sentences are expected in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the situation remains fluid as the opposition continues to face challenges under the current administration.
