Maputo, Mozambique — The United Kingdom has allocated 79.9 million US dollars to Mozambique’s water infrastructure, funding initiatives aimed at enhancing access to clean water and sanitation in rural areas. The disbursement is part of the Transformation of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Services (T-WASH) programme, which spanned from 2015 to 2026.
Under the T — WASH initiative, over 200 water systems and approximately 2,000 wells were established or improved, benefiting rural communities. The programme also focused on reinforcing the planning, delivery, and maintenance of water and sanitation services, resulting in improved sanitation for 3.3 million people.
Since 2009, the UK has been a committed partner in Mozambique’s water and sanitation efforts, supporting the National Rural Water and Sanitation Strategy (PRONASAR). The National Water Supply and Sanitation Directorate (DNAAS) was the principal implementing body for the T-WASH programme.
As the T — WASH programme concludes, the UK government has outlined its intention to redirect its focus towards mobilizing climate finance and private investment. This shift aims to reduce reliance on traditional aid financing and ensure the long-term sustainability of the infrastructure developed.
The UK’s investment comes as Mozambique’s government acknowledges the need for an additional 4.1 billion dollars to further expand sustainable water supply and sanitation systems. The end of the T-WASH programme marks a significant milestone in the UK’s partnership with Mozambique, with a commitment to sustainable water solutions in the future.
