N’Djamena, Chad – July 16, 2026 In response to the ongoing Sudanese refugee crisis in Chad, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its partners have expedited relocation efforts for displaced individuals. From May 5 to July 11, 2026, 2,008 people (563 households) were relocated from border areas to the Arkoum site in the Ouaddaï province. This relocation is part of a larger program that has seen 25,676 individuals (6,957 households) moved since April 15, 2026, raising the total number of relocated individuals since January 2026 to 41,948.
The initiative, which began in April 2023, has rehoused 642,843 people (172,002 households) from border areas to secure sites across the provinces of Ennedi East, Sila, Wadi Fira, and Ouaddaï.
The Arkoum site in Ouaddaï province has been established to house and support the newly relocated refugees.
The crisis in Chad has been exacerbated by the conflict in neighboring Sudan, leading to an influx of Sudanese refugees in Chad. It is estimated that around 1. 2 million Sudanese refugees have sought shelter in eastern Chad, primarily due to the intensifying violence in their country.
The relocations are aimed at providing refugees with a safer environment, away from volatile border areas.
The selected sites are secure and equipped with basic amenities to ensure the well — being of the refugees.
The UNHCR reports that the refugees have lost their livelihoods almost completely due to the conflict, making them highly dependent on immediate food assistance and other forms of support. Regional authorities have expressed concerns over the sustainability of the current response mechanisms, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and long-term solution to the crisis.
The UNHCR remains committed to providing protection and assistance to refugees and displaced persons.
The agency is working closely with the Government of Chad and other partners to ensure that the relocation process is carried out in a manner that respects the rights and dignity of the refugees.
The situation in Chad highlights the global nature of the refugee crisis and the need for a coordinated and compassionate response from the international community.
The accelerated relocation efforts in the country reflect the commitment of humanitarian organizations to mitigate the suffering of those affected by conflict and displacement.
