West Bank: UNICEF Reports on Intensifying Humanitarian Crisis and Child Vulnerability DATELINE: Ramallah, Occupied Palestinian Territory – May 15, 2026 In a concerning update on the humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is experiencing a severe escalation of violence, displacement, and access restrictions, severely compromising the safety and well-being of children. Over 800,000 people, nearly a quarter of the West Bank’s population, are in urgent need of health and water and sanitation (WASH) assistance, as displacement, movement restrictions, and settler violence continue to restrict access to essential services.
The situation is particularly dire in Area C and the Jordan Valley. NUT GRAF: The report, detailing the period from January to April 2026, reveals a concerning trend of displacement and violence, with two-thirds of displacement incidents linked to settler attacks and access restrictions occurring in the Jordan Valley. Over 150,000 children are facing barriers to education due to insecurity and infrastructure damage.
The report highlights the deepening psychological distress among children, with high levels of fear, sleep disturbances, and behavior changes reported.
The needs for child protection and mental health and psychosocial support significantly exceed available services, especially in high — risk areas. Displacement, movement restrictions, and demolition-driven instability have become a norm for children in the West Bank. Approximately 12,000 children from three refugee camps in Jenin and Tulkarm governorates remain displaced for over a year, with no prospect for return.
Additionally, over 220 households in Silwan neighborhood in East Jerusalem are at risk of displacement due to eviction and demolition orders. Grave violations, including detention and conflict-related violence, have impacted children, primarily boys. Between January and April 2026, 13 Palestinian children were killed, and over 139 were injured, with over one-third of injuries due to live ammunition.
Nearly 350 children are held in military detention, subject to violence and harsh conditions.
The psychological toll on children and their families is profound, with repeated exposure to violence and displacement driving persistent distress. Without timely protection and mental health support, children may face lifelong difficulties with mental health and wellbeing. KICKER: UNICEF calls for an immediate end to the violence and the protection of children, emphasizing the need for access to basic services for all Palestinian civilians.
The international community is urged to act with urgency to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in the West Bank.
