Tunis, March 31, 2026 — The World Bank has approved a substantial investment of $332.5 million to bolster water security and agricultural resilience in Tunisia. The funding will support two pivotal projects, marking the initial phase of the Water Resilience and Security Program. This program is designed to tackle water challenges across both rural and urban environments, aiming to create over 4,000 permanent jobs and more than 13,000 temporary positions.
The World Bank’s commitment to Tunisia underscores its dedication to long-term support for the nation’s water sector. Alexandre Arrobbio, the Bank’s Operations Chief for Tunisia, highlighted the urgency of addressing water scarcity and protecting essential services.
The Water Resilience, Security, and Valuation Project, valued at $124 million, focuses on enhancing irrigation services and agricultural yields. It will target infrastructure rehabilitation and the adoption of climate-smart technologies in key regions.
The Water Resilience and Security Project for Potable Water, with a budget of $208.5 million, aims to improve water quality and operational efficiency for the National Water Exploitation and Distribution Company (SONEDE). This project will also expand desalination capabilities and deploy smart meters to enhance water supply reliability.
The multi — phased Water Resilience and Security Program is set to invest a total of $700 million over ten years, fostering a diverse water supply and modernizing service providers in Tunisia.
