CITY, Zimbabwe — A wave of Zimbabwean nationals is returning to their homeland, prompted by escalating violence in South Africa’s urban centers, particularly in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has initiated a DREF Operation to aid in the repatriation process. Since March 2026, a surge in violence targeting foreign nationals has intensified, leading to intimidation, displacement, and loss of access to basic services.
As of mid — 2026, over 40,198 Zimbabwean returnees have self-repatriated, with 4,795 receiving assistance through the State-assisted repatriation program.
The primary entry point for these returnees is the Beitbridge Border Post in Matabeleland South Province, Zimbabwe. Here, they are processed at the Beitbridge Reception Centre before being transported to their areas of origin across the country.
The Government of Zimbabwe has convened several coordination meetings to manage and assist returning migrants.
The current phase of high — volume arrivals, combined with winter conditions, has intensified humanitarian needs due to prolonged waiting times and exposure to low temperatures.
The DREF Operation, activated on July 13, 2026, focuses on providing essential assistance, including transportation, food, water, and shelter, to the returning Zimbabweans. This response is part of a broader effort to address the increased pressure on Zimbabwe’s health system and economy.
As the situation unfolds, the long — term implications for both South Africa and Zimbabwe are expected to affect labor markets, social cohesion, and economic progress.
The response from both countries and the international community will be crucial in addressing the underlying causes of the violence and working towards a more inclusive and stable future.
