Libreville, Gabon — July 17, 2026 The Gabonese government has officially launched the second phase of its fishery program, Gab-Pêche, in Donguila, Komo-Mondah department, Estuaire province. This initiative, aimed at reinforcing support for artisanal fishers, promoting sustainable practices, and addressing their primary concerns and needs, marks a significant step towards modernizing and enhancing the productivity of the artisanal fishing sector. Jean Bernard Mougoussi, the head of the fisheries delegation, emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a more modern, productive, and sustainable artisanal fishing industry while remaining attentive to the needs of those on the ground.
The program’s first phase, which commenced in 2025, included a campaign of sensitization in various coastal areas of Gabon. Despite initial challenges, the government is moving forward with a renewed approach for the second phase, focusing on infrastructure improvement, training for local fishers, and enhanced monitoring and control of fishing activities. Georges Libertin Ngondo Mbourou, the creator of plastic pirogues, highlighted the benefits of these vessels, such as durability, safety, and low maintenance costs, as a suitable alternative for Gabonese fishers.
Fisherman Moutendi Ulrich Noël expressed optimism regarding the initiative, stating that the opportunity to voice their concerns was welcomed, and they hope the announced solutions will improve their working conditions and incomes.
The second phase of Gab — Pêche is part of the government’s broader efforts to promote sustainable development and economic growth in Gabon, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contributing to the country’s economic development.
As the program progresses, its success will hinge on the government’s ability to implement effective strategies, ensure transparency, and collaborate with local stakeholders.
