Gabon: Dieudonné Aba’a Owono’s Journey as a Key Jurist. LIBREVILLE, Gabon — 27 December 2025 (AGP) – Dieudonné Aba’a Owono, a prominent figure in Gabon’s judicial landscape, has been at the forefront of the nation’s legal and political life. Since the Transition period, Owono has served as the President of the Constitutional Court, a pivotal institution in regulating Gabon’s political and democratic processes.
Born on November 8, 1965, in Oyem, Woleu-Ntem Province, Owono’s journey began with his education in the public school system, starting at Ebiane before moving to Libreville. He completed his baccalauréat série B in 1984 at the Lycée national Léon Mba. His academic pursuits led him to the Faculty of Law and Economic Sciences at the University Omar Bongo, followed by the Gabonese National School of Magistracy, where he earned a Diploma in Judicial Studies in 1989, marking his formal entry into the legal profession.
Aba’a Owono’s career began as a judge at the Libreville Tribunal in 1989. Over the years, he ascended the judicial ranks, holding various roles at the prosecutor’s office between 1994 and 1999. His expertise grew as he served as a judge of instruction and then as the President of the Oyem Tribunal from 2003 to 2008, known for his professional rigor.
In 2005, Owono was promoted to the rank of magistrate outside the hierarchy and appointed as a Commissioner to the Law at the Council of State. He held the position of Deputy Commissioner General to the Law in 2010. From 2015 to 2018, he served as the Deputy Director-General of the Gabonese Council of Carriers.
His role expanded again at the Council of State, where he was a Commissioner General Adjunct to the Law from 2019 to 2022, before being promoted to President of the Chamber in 2022. Parallel to his judicial duties, Owono has been actively involved in electoral matters since 1996, serving as the head of departmental and provincial electoral commissions, contributing to electoral dispute management.
In 2025, as President of the Constitutional Court, Owono played a crucial role in managing various electoral processes, including the referendum, presidential, legislative, and senatorial elections.
His leadership in conducting electoral disputes with method and impartiality has reinforced the credibility and authority of the Court. Aba’a Owono’s commitment to professional development is evident through his participation in specialized training programs, including at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva in 1991.
He has also been an instructor at the Gabonese National School of Magistracy and a former intern at the ERSUMA in Cotonou, reflecting his dedication to the training of magistrates.
In recognition of his service to the state, Aba’a Owono has been honored with the national Order of Merit, receiving the rank of knight and later officer. His passion for sports is also noteworthy, as he presided over the Gabonese Volleyball Federation from 1994 to 2004 and led the legal committee of the Confederation of African Volleyball from 1998 to 2004. Aba’a Owono’s career is a testament to his dedication to the legal profession and his role in shaping Gabon’s political and judicial landscape.
