Ivory Coast Advances to AFCON Quarterfinals, Set to Face Egypt. Marrakesh, Morocco — LEAD PARAGRAPH: The Ivory Coast football team secured their place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinals with a convincing 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso on Monday. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo was the standout player, scoring the opening goal and setting up Yan Diomande for the second.
The win marks the first time since 2010 that the defending champions have reached the last eight of the tournament.
The Ivory Coast now face a formidable opponent in Egypt, who await them in the semifinals. Diallo’s performance was pivotal in the victory, with his first goal coming from a powerful strike that eluded goalkeeper Herve Koffi.
He then assisted Diomande, whose beautifully executed shot left Koffi no chance.
Bazoumana Toure added the third goal in the closing stages of the match.
The Burkinabe team had their moments, with Dango Ouattara coming close to scoring, but it was the Ivorians who dominated possession throughout the match.
The Burkinabe defender Adamo Nagalo was cautioned early for a foul on Diallo, but the Ivory Coast’s control of the match was such that it was evident they would go on to win. Franck Kessie, the team’s captain, nearly doubled their lead but was just off target.
The match was also notable for VAR’s role in confirming the initial goal, which Burkina Faso had wanted disallowed.
Burkina Faso coach Brama Traore made changes to his team at halftime, with Blati Toure replacing Nagalo and Georgi Minoungou coming on for Lassina Traore. Despite these changes, the Ivory Coast continued to assert their dominance.
The quarterfinals will be a tough test for the Ivory Coast, who have not faced Egypt since the 2017 AFCON, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
Since Egypt successfully defended the title in Angola 16 years ago, seven title holders have failed to reach the last eight, including Ivory Coast in 2015.
The Ivory Coast will travel to Agadir, Morocco, where they will face the record seven — time AFCON champions, Egypt, in search of a semifinal spot.
The match is set for Saturday and will be a pivotal encounter in the tournament.
