AU Summit 2026: Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Discuss Women’s Leadership in Africa. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — At the African Union (AU) Summit 2026, a significant discussion took place on the importance of women-led governance. Hosted by Namibia’s Mission in Addis Ababa, the high-level conversation focused on the theme “Beyond Barriers: Women Leaders Reshaping African Governance.”.
It featured current and former female Heads of State, including Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female Head of State. Moderated by Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, the AU Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security and former Secretary-General of the World YWCA, the dialogue centered on the role of women in transforming the continent’s political and governance landscape. Both President Nandi-Ndaitwah and President Sirleaf emphasized the critical nature of inclusive leadership and the importance of resilience, integrity, and service in governance.
They highlighted the need for partnerships over polarization and the role of mentorship and solidarity in sustaining progress.
In discussing the challenges and opportunities facing women in leadership, President Nandi — Ndaitwah highlighted the importance of male allies who support women’s roles in public life. She advocated for a broader vision of women’s roles in governance and called for a more cooperative and equitable approach to managing shared resources, such as water, in light of climate change impacts.
The conversation also delved into the need for intergenerational leadership, where mentorship and network — building are crucial in fostering a sustainable future for Africa. President Nandi-Ndaitwah specifically addressed the African Union’s theme for 2026: ensuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems as part of Agenda 2063.
The session concluded with a call for solidarity across genders, generations, and borders.
The leaders agreed that Africa’s governance architecture must reflect the voices and aspirations of all its people.
