LIBREVILLE, Gabon — On the occasion of World Endometriosis Day, Gabon’s Health Minister, Professor Elsa Joséphine Nkana Ayo épouse Bivigou, emphasized the need for increased awareness and support for women with endometriosis during a speech in Libreville on March 27, 2026.
The minister highlighted that endometriosis, a chronic condition causing severe pain and potentially affecting fertility, is often underdiagnosed and misunderstood. Professor Ayo noted that out of 6,666 women screened in Gabon over the last 30 years, 7.2% were diagnosed with the disease, illustrating its prevalence despite its often hidden nature.
Acknowledging the work of associations and healthcare professionals who support endometriosis patients, Professor Ayo outlined the government’s commitment to enhancing the situation. This includes educating women at a younger age, speeding up diagnosis, improving medical care, and providing psychological and social support.
In her call to action, the minister appealed to the entire society to unite in the fight against endometriosis, emphasizing the importance of listening to women’s experiences and addressing the minimization of their pain. Professor Ayo’s statements underscore the necessity for a comprehensive approach to tackle endometriosis, ensuring women receive adequate care and support to manage the condition effectively.
