CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Geordin Hill-Lewis has been elected as the new leader of South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA), marking a significant development in the nation’s political sphere. Hill-Lewis, previously the mayor of Cape Town, now aims to lead the DA into the 2029 general elections, challenging the African National Congress (ANC) for dominance.
In his acceptance speech, Hill — Lewis expressed gratitude to the party delegates and vowed to serve with humility and a strong sense of duty. He pledged to focus on building a stronger, more inclusive South Africa, addressing the country’s history of corruption and mismanagement.
The DA, which currently holds six cabinet posts in a coalition government with the ANC, has been credited with restoring some confidence in the nation. However, political tensions persist. Hill-Lewis’s supporters are united in their backing, with Sanjay Singh, a prominent figure, praising the new leader’s commitment to grassroots improvements and his emphasis on diversity and inclusion.
Despite the DA’s growing popularity, the ANC remains the most supported party, polling at 38 percent in a recent survey by Ipsos. As the ANC prepares for a crucial leadership conference ahead of the 2029 elections, the party has yet to nominate a successor to President Cyril Ramaphosa, adding to the uncertainty in South Africa’s political landscape.
