Rabat, Morocco – In a major anti-drug operation on Thursday, Moroccan authorities apprehended 14 suspects in Bab Taza, a rural area near Chefchaouen, and seized significant quantities of cocaine, cannabis resin, and alcohol, underscoring the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region.
The Tetouan security services, supported by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), executed the operation following intelligence indicating the suspects’involvement in a drug trafficking network.
The authorities caught the suspects in possession and distribution of drugs, leading to the recovery of 10. 5 kilograms of cocaine, 82 kilograms of hashish resin, and 1,054 bottles of alcohol. Among the seized items were MAD 860,000 ($92800) in cash, believed to be proceeds from illegal drug sales, several bladed weapons, electronic weighing scales, fake vehicle license plates, and a vehicle suspected of being used in the illegal activities.
One of the suspects was previously wanted for similar drug — related offenses.
The arrests and seizure of such substantial quantities of illegal substances highlight the sophistication of drug trafficking networks in the region, particularly in areas like Bab Taza, which benefit from remote and mountainous terrain conducive to the concealment of illegal activities. Moroccan authorities continue to enhance their efforts to dismantle these networks, reflecting the country’s commitment to curbing the drug trade and maintaining public safety.
