LIBREVILLE, Gabon — On the African Day Against Corruption, celebrated annually on July 11, the President of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, emphasized the importance of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the fight against corruption. During his address, Youssouf highlighted the need to expand the promotion of integrity and anti-corruption efforts across Africa, reflecting the AU’s ambition to consolidate democratic governance based on shared values. Youssouf called on member states to strengthen integrity and transparency policies to accelerate the realization of the Agenda 2063, the AU’s strategic framework for peace and prosperity.
He reminded the audience that integrity and transparency are essential remedies to combat corruption, a disease that hinders the continent’s development.
The President of the AU Commission also commended the role of the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC) in implementing the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption.
However, he emphasized that legal and institutional frameworks alone are not enough and advocated for a transformation of mentalities based on ethics and responsibility. Youssouf encouraged member states to adopt and implement national integrity and ethics strategies, while calling for enhanced multilateral cooperation to expedite the recovery of illicitly acquired assets and harmonize anti-corruption efforts across the continent.
The Gabonese government’s focus on a comprehensive approach to combating corruption aligns with the AU’s broader strategy.
The African Day Against Corruption provided an opportunity to share best practices and celebrate successes in the fight against corruption, while also acknowledging the ongoing challenges.
As the day comes to a close, the call for integrity, transparency, and accountability continues to resonate across Africa, emphasizing the importance of a unified approach to tackle corruption as a significant obstacle to the continent’s development and integration.
