LIBREVILLE, Gabon — The first edition of the Coupe de la Zone d’investissement spéciale (ZIS) de Nkok was officially launched on Saturday at the Centre international multisectoriel de formation et d’enseignement professionnels (CIMFEP) stadium, marking a significant step towards social cohesion among businesses within the Nkok Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
The event was attended by local authorities, including Ntoum’s 2nd arrondissement mayor, Jean-François Ngwa Ondzagha, and several GSEZ officials, such as Corporate Affairs Director Paul Dany Menga Bekale and Human Resources Director Patrick Nguema Metogo.
The tournament, which aims to strengthen ties between businesses, public institutions, local communities, and zone partners, was launched by GSEZ’s Corporate Affairs Director, who emphasized the role of sports in promoting values like respect, discipline, teamwork, and solidarity essential for the development of the Nkok SEZ.
The Coupe de la ZIS de Nkok features a male tournament with a two — pool format, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the semi-finals.
The female tournament will see two teams compete in the final on August 1st.
In the first match, Metal Chemical defeated GSEZ 1-0, while Foot Veneer eliminated NOIP in a penalty shootout (3-3; 5-4).
The launch of the Coupe de la ZIS de Nkok is part of Gabon’s broader initiative to invest in sports infrastructure and community development. It comes as Gabon’s national football team, currently ranked 86 by FIFA, continues to build its reputation on the international stage.
The tournament is a collaborative effort between the Fédération Gabonaise de Football (FEGAFOOT) and the government, aiming to contribute to the growth of football at the grassroots level and foster a culture of sportsmanship and teamwork. While the immediate impact of the Coupe de la ZIS de Nkok is yet to be seen, its launch is a testament to Gabon’s commitment to leveraging sports for social and economic development.
As Gabon invests in its sports infrastructure, the Coupe de la ZIS de Nkok could serve as a model for similar initiatives across the continent, offering hope and opportunity for young players and football enthusiasts alike.
